Intellectual Property Policy
Effective 13 October 2026
DIYLens respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects everyone on DIYLens to do the same. Our Terms of Use and Community Guidelines don't allow content that infringes someone else's copyright or trademark. This applies to DIYs, photo posts, stories, sounds, comments, profiles, Marketplace listings and promoted posts.
Copyright
Copyright is a legal right that protects original works of authorship, such as music, videos, photos, writing and artwork. In Nigeria it is governed by the Copyright Act 2022. Copyright protects the way an idea is expressed — a particular video or song — not the idea or facts behind it. Anyone can show how to fix a leaking tap; no one may copy someone else's video of it without permission.
Copyright infringement
We don't allow content that infringes copyright. Using someone else's copyrighted work without their permission or a legal exception — for example re-uploading another creator's video as your own — may break this policy.
Not every unauthorised use is infringement. Nigerian law, like the law in many countries, allows some uses without permission, such as fair dealing for criticism, review, news reporting, teaching or parody, as long as the use is fair and the source is acknowledged where practicable.
Removing content and repeat infringers
Content that infringes someone else's copyright may be removed. When we remove content after a copyright report, the account can receive a strike, and we may limit features or suspend accounts that repeatedly infringe. We may also suspend an account immediately in serious cases.
Information for rightsholders: reporting copyright infringement
If you believe someone is using your copyrighted work without permission, you may want to contact them first — many problems are resolved quickly that way.
You can report it in the app (••• or press and hold → Report → Intellectual property violation), or email our legal team at legal@diylens.com.ng with:
- your name, address, phone number and email, and whether you're the owner or acting for them;
- a description of the copyrighted work, with a link or copy if it's online;
- the link to each post, DIY, sound or listing you say infringes it;
- a statement that you believe in good faith that the use isn't authorised by you, your agent or the law; and
- a statement that the information in your report is accurate, and your signature (typing your full name is fine).
We may share your name, the name of the work and your contact email with the person who posted the content so they can understand the report or respond to it. Reports that are knowingly false or misleading may be rejected and can make you legally liable.
Information for users: if your content was removed
Content removed after a copyright report is no longer visible to anyone on DIYLens.
If you believe it was removed by mistake, or that you were allowed to use the material, you can contact the person who reported it, or send us a counter-notice at legal@diylens.com.ng with your name and contact details, a link to the removed content, why you believe it was removed by mistake or is allowed, and a statement that the information is accurate. We may pass your counter-notice, including your contact details, to the person who reported it. If they don't take legal action, we may restore your content. Decisions to restore content are at DIYLens's discretion.
Trademark
A trademark is a word, symbol, logo, slogan or combination of these that identifies the source of goods or services and sets them apart from others. In Nigeria trademarks are protected under the Trade Marks Act.
Trademark infringement
We don't allow using someone else's trademark in a way that is likely to confuse people about who makes, sells or endorses a product or service — for example a shop name, profile or listing that looks like it belongs to a brand when it doesn't.
Using a trademark to refer to the brand's own product is usually fine — reviewing a phone, showing how to repair a branded appliance, or saying a spare part fits a certain car model — as long as you don't suggest the brand is behind your content.
Counterfeits
Counterfeits are fake goods that copy a registered trademark without permission. We don't allow buying, selling, trading or promoting counterfeit goods anywhere on DIYLens, including the Marketplace and promoted posts.
Removing content and account bans
Content that infringes a trademark or offers counterfeits may be removed, and accounts that do so repeatedly — or in serious cases — may be restricted or suspended.
Information for rightsholders: reporting trademark infringement
Report it in the app (Report → Intellectual property violation) or email legal@diylens.com.ng with your contact details, the trademark and where it's registered (with the registration number), links to the content or listing, and why you believe it infringes your rights. False or misleading reports may be rejected and can make you legally liable.
Information for users: if your content was removed
If you believe your content was removed by mistake, you can contact the person who reported it, or send us an appeal at legal@diylens.com.ng explaining why. We may share your appeal and contact details with the person who reported it.
General note
You are responsible for what you post. If you're unsure whether you can use someone else's work, name or brand, you may want to speak to a lawyer — DIYLens can't give legal advice.
DIYLens isn't in a position to decide disputes between rightsholders and users. We act on reports in line with this policy and the law, and both sides remain free to resolve their dispute in court or by other means.
