These guidelines are for law enforcement officers and government agencies who want to request information about DIYLens users. DIYLens is operated in Nigeria. We respond to requests in line with Nigerian law, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, our Terms of Use and our Privacy Policy.
We respect our users' privacy and only disclose their information when we are legally required to, or in an emergency involving a risk of death or serious physical harm.
These guidelines are for information only and don't create any rights or obligations for DIYLens or anyone else.
1. Basic requirements
We disclose user information only in response to valid legal process issued under Nigerian law — for example a court order, warrant or other order from a court or authority with the power to compel disclosure.
We review every request carefully. We may push back on, narrow or refuse requests that are unclear, too broad, or not legally valid.
2. Types of user data
Depending on the account and how it was used, we may have:
Account information›
- Username and display name
- Email address and/or phone number used to register
- Date the account was created
- Profile information the user added
Log information›
- IP addresses used to sign in, where retained
- Device and browser information
Content›
- DIYs, photo posts, stories and comments
- Direct messages
- Marketplace listings, gigs and job posts
- Questions and snaps sent to DIYLens AI
Transactions›
- Records of payments made to DIYLens for plans, seller plans and Promote (processed by Flutterwave)
We don't have card numbers — card payments are handled by our payment processor, Flutterwave. Not all data is available for every account, and data deleted by the user, or held only for a limited time, may no longer exist.
3. What a request must include
- The name of the requesting agency and the officer, with badge or ID number, official email and phone number.
- The username or profile link of each account (diylens.com.ng/username) — not just a display name or screenshot.
- The specific information you are asking for and the date range.
- The legal basis for the request and a copy of the court order or other legal process.
- A short description of the investigation and how the information relates to it.
4. User notification
We generally notify users before disclosing their information, unless we are prohibited by law or court order, or notice would risk harm to someone or the loss of evidence.
5. Preservation requests
While you obtain legal process, you can ask us to preserve an account's records. Send a signed request on official letterhead, including the account's username or profile link, to legal@diylens.com.ng. We'll preserve a one-time snapshot of the available data for 90 days, which can be extended once by a further request. Please confirm whether you still need the data before the period ends.
6. Emergency requests
If there is an emergency involving an imminent risk of death or serious physical harm to anyone, email legal@diylens.com.ng with “EMERGENCY” in the subject. Explain the nature of the emergency, why it is urgent, the account involved, and the information you need to prevent the harm. We may disclose information without legal process in these cases, in line with the law.
If someone is in immediate danger, contact the police or emergency services first.
7. Other
We may seek reimbursement of reasonable costs for complex or very large requests where the law allows.
We may refuse requests that don't meet these guidelines and may change these guidelines at any time.
Frequently asked questions
Does DIYLens hold money for buyers and sellers?›
No. Buyers and sellers agree price and payment between themselves. DIYLens only has records of payments made to DIYLens itself — for subscriptions, seller plans and Promote — and of messages and listings on the app.
Will DIYLens tell the user about my request?›
Our policy is to notify users before disclosing their information, unless the law prohibits it, a court order requires us not to, or notice would create a risk of harm to someone or of evidence being destroyed. If you believe notice should not be given, say so in your request and explain why.
Can I get deleted content?›
Once content or an account is deleted it may no longer be available. If you're investigating an account, send a preservation request as early as possible.
Can you identify an account from a screenshot?›
Please send the account's username or profile link (diylens.com.ng/username). A screenshot alone is often not enough to identify an account reliably.
Do you accept requests from outside Nigeria?›
DIYLens is operated in Nigeria. Requests from authorities outside Nigeria should usually come through the relevant mutual legal assistance process or a Nigerian authority. In emergencies involving a risk of death or serious harm, contact us directly as described above.
I'm not a law enforcement officer. How do I report something?›
Use Report in the app, or see the Help Centre. For copyright or trademark issues, see the Intellectual Property Policy. If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first.
